Today I had the privilege of speaking to a couple of Watershed employees at the V&A Waterfront. First I popped in at the Bubble Tea place. I got chatting to the server. I asked him whether he treats students differently to other customers and if so why. He said that he finds that he makes different kinds of conversation with school kids as with other customers. He takes on more of a 'teacher role' - finds it his responsibility to remind them to 'mind their manners'.
Then I got chatting to the girl at the artisan chocolate place. She said that she finds school kids to be really rude and disrespectful. As a retailer, she finds that they tend to take all the samplers but not actually spend any money.
When talking to both of them it came out that they find school kids irritating as they distract them from dealing with their serious customers. They both try to alter their communication styles in an effort to 'connect' with them but find it a waste of time!
When I was at school I had no idea that shop assistants prejudged me when I was in my uniform. Discovering this really made me feel very uncomfortable. I almost felt like I needed to apologise for all school kids.
